Costumes Design

For my costume design project, I want to research about the famous play Oedipus the King. The creator of the story is Sophocles. The play was first performed in c. 429 BC. This is the best play I have read in High school. It is very easy to read and understand. Compare to the other plays I have read. The play is about a man who was born into a prophecy. The gods prophesied that he would take the life of his father and marry his mother. The prophecy came true and at the end Oedipus blinding himself so that he will not see his father and mother in the afterlife.
Oedipus- Son of Laius and Jocasta. He is the protagonist of the play. Toward the end of the play, he realizes that prophecy was true. He realizes that he killed his father and marries his mother. He blinded himself with the pins from his mother cloths.

Jocasta - Queen of Thebes, Oedipus’s wife and mother, she hung herself in the end of the play.
Laius- King of Thebes, Oedipus’s father, killed by the hands of his son.
Creon - Oedipus’s brother-in-law.
Antigone - Child of Oedipus and Jocasta, and therefore both Oedipus’s daughter and his sister. Banish from Thebes
Tiresias - The blind soothsayer of Thebes.
Shepherd- Witness that saw Oedipus killed Laius.

For this costume design, I have included pictures of the main characters of Oedipus the King play. The design to this play is very easy. Most of the characters will be wearing their traditional robes. All of their clothes will be intensely colored with decoration of intricate designs. I will have the two main garments that were usually worn at their time, a tunic, either a peplos or chiton and a cloak. For the footwear, women and men will wear sandals, slippers, soft shoes, or boots.
