Relate theater to your life

I can relate the world of theatre to my life. Acting, directing, playwriting, producing is things that happen is real life. I have encountered a lot of stuff related to theatre. Musical performance, singing in Church choir, listening to music, worshiping God at church, and playing sports. Living in the 21th century, the digital era, music is a prime example. Everyone from any culture listens to music. I myself listen to music almost every day. I will always have my mp3 player on everyday listening to music as I power walk to class. Watching television is another way theatre is related to my life. I watch TV almost every day. All that is on the TV is people acting but it is not live. In my textbook, it was stated that theatre is a live event it cannot be repeated of tape recorded. The audience that watching the play is what makes up the theatre. Also video games can relate to theatre. There is a big variety of different games out on the market. For example, the famous Final Fantasy games, which let you, play through the eyes of hero that has to save to world from total destruction. When someone plays this game they are acting as this hero with magical powers. I know I am.

Acting is always in my life. When I am back home with my family, I am being a loving son and caring big brother to my little sister. When I am working at McDonald’s I am a good employee making sure that everyone is following orders and doing his or her job. When I am at a concert playing my musical instruments, I am acting as a professional musician. When I am in college, I act as a nerd by studying almost every day. After taking, this class I would have never realize the types of acting I do every day.

As I said before theatre can be related to almost anything in life. In sports, theatre is related to it. The athletes have to perform under intense pressure so that they can win the game. The people who are watching the sports are also related to theatre.

I can also relate to theatre by my major. Because I am a Chemistry major, I am expected to know a lot of scientific materials. For example, when we have Chemistry labs we are acting out as a scientist in the lab by doing research. Also after the lab, I will have to complete my lab work, which is very hard to do. As I said before we are expected to know scientific materials, so we have to figure out how to solve the lab questions by ourselves. Another time when I am acting as a scientist is when I am studying my Calculus. I will always be at the library in one of those study rooms practicing problems on the chalkboard. I will sometimes feel like the famous Albert Einstein. Writing these strange equations and solving them quickly. It is funny because during my lab when I am conduct the experiment I will have my safety glasses on and a good pair of clean gloves. With all this stuff on, I really feel a scientist.
After taking this theatre course I have learn a lot of new knowledge about this field. I had never thought that the simplest things I do every day is related to the world of theatre. Lastly, in closing this topic I would like to mention another way of how theatre is related to everyday activities. When you have to give a speech, many people act as if there are the president. I know I do, because once I am on stage I have this fear on talking. Therefore, when I think I am the president I feel powerful and the feel is lost.

Play Review

The play that I attended this semester is “A servant to Two Masters” I saw this play at the Waller hall theatre center at IUP. I think the way the theatre looks is shabby; the place needs to be more appealing to attract more guess from outside the campus. The cost of the show was $14 for adults and $8 with an I-card for students. This was the first live theatre I have actually been to. I found the experience to be very wonderful. At first, I was shock how dark it got before the play started. Then once the play started, the stage was illuminated with a very bright light. Then when the play started, I thought it was funny how they were talking. Then when I saw them in mask, I was almost about to laugh. Then I realize it must be very hard to talk like that thought-out the whole play. In the play started a little slow, but eventually the more, the story unfolded the more interesting it got. I was surprise of how the characters were able to project their voice without the use of a microphone. What I thought was amazing was how the scene change. The sliding of the stage back and forth between scenes was cool. The costumes were very creative; I like how they made it to match everyone character. I light the different type of hairstyles. My favorite costume was Truffaldino’s, he reminds me of a clown in the circus.


This play is a comic play about a servant who thinks he can outsmart everyone by serving two masters. This is funny because no servant can serve two masters. The two masters he was serving were Beatrice and Florindo. Truffaldino is the name of the servant. The twist of the play was when the character Federigo, was actually Beatrice disguised as a man. The main purpose of her deception was to look for her true lover Florindo. They both end up staying in the same castle. They goofily avoid seeing each other. Truffladino was given a chest by both of his masters. Being inquisitive has he is he decided to open both chest and dig around. Once he does that, he hears someone coming so he randomly starts tossing the clothes in any chest. Florindo asks for his coat and discovers a picture of him, which he had given this picture to Beatrice. He thinks she die and he runs off crying in tears. Beatrice comes in and also asks for a book from her chest. Once she receives the book, she realizes it was Florindo notebook. She also gets emotional thinking that he is dead. They both attempted to commit suicide, by hanging themselves. During the process, they but see each other. Thinking that each other is died, they both greet each other in a romantic way. Because Truffaldino had mixed up their clothes, they were able to find each other. At the end of the play Truffaldino ends up marring Smeraldina.
The actor and actresses were very good at acting. The acting in the play was very funny. I find myself laughing hysterically. The way they would talk and hold these weird posing was absolutely funny. The most funniest part I thought was funny was when Truffaldino got mad and walk back into the door on the right side of the stage while the stage was changing to another scene. Just then he appears out of nowhere on the right side of the stage with his head turn back talking angrily. It was just funny to see that because he must have ran really fast to the other side to start the next scene. The actor who played the main character, Trufffaldino, did a very good job. Sean Barrett was the actor. He did a very good job by getting into his character. It was stated that Truffaldino character was suppose to be a fool and not a bright person. Sean Barrett acting all goofy throughout the play made him a good actor. The actress who played Smeraldina really got into her character. Natalie Palamides brought out the sassiness. She and Sean Barrett brought favor to the play.

After seeing this play I love it, it was very entertaining the actors and actresses did act out their characters perfectly. I want online to watch another play with different cast and they too acting the same way the IUP actors and actresses did.

Broadway in NYC

The best place to see a good Broadway show is in New York City. NYC is well known for its Broadway shows. Every weekend there is always people there to watch shows. To buy tickets to see a Broadway show is simple. Tickets prices vary for the type of show you want to see. The prices usually run form 50 dollars to even 150 dollars. The show that is high rated is the one that is price high. The price of the tickets also vary on the where you want to seat. I think this makes sense because will would want to seat in a bad location to watch a play. If you wanted to see a show there are many ways in which one can purchase tickets, online, over the phone, and the box office.
The easiest way to purchase ticket is through the website. The two popular website people use is playbill.com and Theatermania.com. At these websites, you can get a very good discount on Broadway tickets. Nevertheless, people have been known, to buy tickets from an ad in the newspaper, or from people of the streets. They are other means of buying tickets; you can also be tickets over the phone. This is sometimes convenient when you do not have computer access. However, buying tickets this way does not gave you that good discount they will unusually sell it for a full price. Lastly, you can buy tickets at the box office. These tickets tend to came in special discounts. I think buying tickets online is more beneficial because there is always a special discount on them.
The most recent popular shows to watch is; The Lion King, The Addams Family, Come Fly Away, Mary Poppins, Spider-Man, Turn off the Dark, Everyday Rapture, A Behanding in Spokane, Next to Normal, Million Dollar Quartet, Blue Man Group, A Little Night Music, La Cage aux Folles, Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliott, and many others. These are the most popular shows out right now. There is a very large variety of shows to watch. You can never get tired watching the different types of plays.
I have never been to a Broadway show in New York. If I had a chance to go see, a play the ones I would like to see is The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, and A Little Night Music and Chicago. I have heard so much about these shows. The one play I would love to see is The Lion King. This is the most popular show on Broadway, which has been running for years. This play is about a young lion cub name Simba. He is trick by his Uncle that he was the reason why his father was killed, he was force to run away from his home. Dashaun Young and Joshua Jackson play Simba. Nathaniel Stampley plays Mufasa and Derek Smith plays Scar. Tshidi Manye plays Rafiki. Music is by Sir Elton John and lyrics from Tom Rice. The director is Julie Taymor. the play won 2 Oscars and had another 22 wins and 22 nominations


The story is a very emotional one. The most amazing thing about this show, aside from the performances, is how they took an animated feature film, with not one single human character in it, and transformed and translated so brilliantly to the stage. The imagination, costumes, puppetry, and artistry are just amazing to watch. This is why the play has been on live for so many years. Another play I think will be cool to see is Chicago. I like how the show looks so energetic, sexy, and with that breathe taking effects. I really do not know much about the whole story but I have read about the overview of the show.

Light design

For this blog, I want to be creative and deign lights for my play. The name of my play is “The Journey to IUP”. This play is about two young men on their way to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. They go through a lot of grief just to get to school. These two young Men names are Jonathan and Michael. Two very close friends the graduated high school together and now going to the same college together. The setting of the play takes place in two locations at Jonathan house and on interstate 76. The play begins in Jonathan house. This is where the problem starts. His car is constantly overheating. During the trip to IUP, they are face with this problem. The two young men eventually made it to IUP. However, they were an hour late.
The types of lights for this play are unique. When I say unique, I mean that the lighting design would appear in very different vibrant colors. Because most of the play takes place during the night, the stage will be mostly dark. Therefore, the special lighting effects will illuminate the stage. This will present the effects of them being on the interstate. The characters in the play will be in the car for most of the play. So at some point in time the stage will be bright or dark.

I want this play to look very well realistic. Therefore, I took the time to search the internet looking for decent pictures of stage lights. It took a while to find the type of lighting design I want. In my set of pictures, I decided to include a picture of lighting tornado. I thought the effect of how lighting illuminate the sky while a tornado is occurring is cool. The last picture I added will be the lighting use to represent Jonathan’s room.

The play

The Journey to IUP

This is a play of two young men on their first journey to IUP. The setting takes place in two location Philadelphia pa, and Intestate 76. The two characters are Mike and John. They leave for their long journey to IUP on Friday before there semester starts.
The following scene takes place at John’s house. Mike in sleeping on the couch at John’s house waiting for John to return so that they can go to IUP.

John enters the room that Mike is sleeping in.

John: Hey, wake up I got some bad news. (Wakes up Mike)
Mike: What, what is wrong. Is it time to leave?
John: My car keeps overheating.
Mike: Why now! How we going to get to school, we have to be on campus by 12:00 noon for orientation.
John: I know, I am going to try to fix it and then we try to can leave at 4:30 in the morning.
Mike: Is there anything I can do to help.
John: No, it is cool you just go back to sleep.
Mike: You sure.
John: Yeah
Mike goes back to sleep and John begins to fix his car.
John: Yo wake up, its 4:30, lets live to school.
Mike: Ok let’s live.
John: I need you to help me put some more stuff in the car.
Mike: Your Jordan’s in the closet?
John: Yeah all 26 pairs of them.
Mike: you funny. All 26 doe
Mike puts the remaining sneakers in the car and then enters the shotgun seat; John also goes to the driver seat and starts the car.
Mike: It runs good, everything sounds cool wit the car.
John: Yeah, it should take us to Indiana with ease.
They pull off the driveway and started to head towards interstate 76.
John: I hope the trip is pleasant.
Mike: 5 hours is a very long time to be in the car.
John: Yeah I hope I do not far asleep.
Mike: if you start to feel sleepy, just gave me the car.
John: Ok when we get to i-76 I gave you the car.
Mike: That’s fine with me.
John: yeah you better not wreck my car.
Mike: yeah I will not wreck your precious Maybach. (Being sarcastic)
John: Whatever man, it’s a Lamborghini (in British accent)
Mike: Wow , I that’s crazy we bout to be college students.
John: Yeah, IUP gonna be fun.
Mike: yo we chillin with your brother and cousin tonight.
John: Yeah, real shit.
They got to the tollbooth and at 6:00am.
John: I will let you drive soon.
Beep beep beep . The car starts to overthead.
John: F**k, the car is staring to overheat again.
Mike: Damn, I thought you fix it.
John: I know this really sucks. (John pulls over the car and gets out and opens the hood)
John: Yo, can you please get me some water from the trunk.
Mike: yeah, I got you.
John: This will should help get the car get cool. ( John pours in the water in the coolant tanks)
Mike: yo on same real shit, should we turn back.
John: NO, not a good idea, we will not get to Indiana on time.
Mike: yeah I agree, I really do not want to be back home.
The car stars to run again, and they continue on their journey to IUP. 30 minutes later the car begins to overheat.
John: We are screw.
Mike: today going to be a long day.
They pull over to the size of the road.
John: We have to wait a while before we can go again. I am going to let you drive the other half.
Mike: That’s cool, I go put some water in the coolant thing.
John: Thanks man, I am so tired.
Mike: Take a nap my man; I got you with the rest of the trip.
John and Mike both got out the car and quickly switch seats.
John: Let’s the car chill for an hour. I’m going to take a nap.
Mike goes out, pours the water into the coolant, and goes back to the car. He also takes a short nap. An hour later, he wakes up and turns the car on. The car starts and he begins to drive off. John is still asleep. Mike drives the car for another two hours on the interstate. He approaches the tollbooth at Bedford. The machine on the tollbooth ask for the ticket. Mike hesitates, because he knows he lost the stupid ticket. Mike angrily pays the extra 20 dollars for the fare. He pulls into a gas station and John begins to wake up.
John: Wow! That nap felt extra good.
Mike: That’s good.
John: I needed that …. How the car running
Mike: I let the car cool for an hour and when I turn on the car, the engine ran smooth.
John: You pour water into the coolant right.
Mike: Yeah.
John: How much was the toll.
Mike… 20 dollars.
John: What it was supposed to be 10 dollars and 59 cents. (Trying to sound like terry crews from Everyone hates Chris show)
Mike: I know I think I misplace the ticket.
John: Are you serious, why, damn….. well here’s ten dollars. You own me .
Mike: yeah, I know anyways, I’m hungry trying to eat Wendy’s or McDonald’s.
John: Does not matter to man, we can get at Sheetz if you want. You paying right.
Mike: yeah whatever man.
They both want to McDonald’s and order value meals. After the long breakfast Mike, pass the car to John. Saying is he is tired. John takes the car and pulls off. Mike begins to take a nap. John drives in the direction to Indiana. Two hours later in pulls into the township.
John: Mike wake up were here. IUP!!! ( wakes up Mike)
Mike: Oh, what, what happen.
John: look outside.
Mike: Oh where we at this Indiana.
John: yeah were here.
Mike: Oh, wow this is nice, look at the nice pretty girls.
John: Whatever you know you still scare to talk to them.
Mike: oh no, not today, high school was yesterday my son. Imma whole new person!
John: My ding ding, whole new person my ass!
They pull into the campus dorm called Esch hall. As they get out the car, Mike looks back at the car seat and discovers the ticket.
Mike: yo, you where seating on the ticket when you were sleeping.
John: I was, oops, my bad; mhmm let’s go to our room.
Mike: This is going to one long semester.
John: yeah brotha, now help me with my sneakers.
Mike laughs and runs help John brings the stuff into the dorm.
They both register at the front desk and got the keys to the room. Once in the room they realize that they where suppose to be at the HUB for orientation at 12 noon. They both got scare and made the way to the orientation place. It was too late the program was open. They had missed everything. Later on that night, they want to their first college party.

An actor I admire

For this blog, I want like to research Tyler Perry. He is my favorite Playwright. He is also a producer, director and actor. I really admire this person for all of his hard work. He has become the one of Hollywood high pay males in the movie industry. He has over $50 million from writing and producing plays for the urban theater circuit. Tyler Perry was born on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His birth name is Emmitt Perry Jr. He is one of four children, during his early childhood he had a difficulty from his father. His father would always beat him for no apparent reason. At the age of ten, his friend’s mother molested him. With all abuse he received, he tried an attempt to comment suicide. Just to escape the torment of his father abusive beating. His father would always say or do things to him. His father would always discourage him. He stated that he would hear these voices inside of his head saying, “That’s not true” or, “Don’t believe that” or, “You’re going to make it through this”. He said that at the time he never knew what the voices were, he taught was going crazy. Now at the age of forty he now realizes that the voices were an act of God. The voices always gave him comfort. In his teenage years, Emmitt Perry Jr. decides to change his name, in efforts to get always from his father. He stated that because as a child his father would always be physically and mentally abusive towards him. He could not keep his father's name because Tyler did not want to be anything like him. That is why he changed his name from Emmitt Jr. to Tyler.
Tyler Perry contributes to the movie industry through the use of his plays. Perry never completed high school but he did earn his GED. His plays were mostly based from the journal he kept. This is how he would share his stories. His first play was called I know I’ve Been Changed. Through this play is how he started his playwright career. In 1992, his first play did not make a lot of money. He also tried to host the shows in other cites but had little success. He after all has attempts he want broke. He had no money to his name. Tyler had become a homeless man he eventually started to live in his car. He yet tried again to promote his play in 1998. In Atlanta, he went out and rented the House of Blues for another production of I’ve Been Changed. This time around, he has successfully won the hearts of the audience. Now he is a millionaire with a lot of respect from the black community. One of his most remarkable characters Perry use in his plays in the character Madea. He will dress up as this loud, aggressive old woman.



A traditonally African-American portmanteau for "Mother Dear," and, more famously, an alias of Mabel Simmons, a fictional character created by Tyler Perry who, although she is an elderly grandmother, carries at least five guns in her black handbag at all times, smokes copious amounts of marijuana, and causes bodily harm to/murders people when they upset her. Her most notable catch phrase is "I ain't afraid of the po-po!"



What I find appealing about his works is how he struggle through hardships to get to what he is now today. Because of the success he had in his plays he later corporate that idea into movies. His first film adaption was Diary of a Mad Black Woman. This movie was a big hit. It gross revenue was $50,652,203. In all of his movies, Tyler Perry will always have a role player that is an African American female. This character is usually in a life struggle against their husband or boyfriend. Toward the end of the story, the female character will find a new man that believes in her and loves her. In all his stories, there is always a message that is being spread across. This is why I admire this playwright/ artist very much. Because after watching his movies I will always have that feeling of happiness from the lesson, I learn. I can sometimes relate to Tyler Perry because I grew up in a poor neighborhood back in my early school years. I would always have a hard time going to school with the fear of always thinking I will get shot on the way to school.



After taking this theatre course I have came to realize that all of Tyler Perry's is a broadway. During his play they will often by a musical involve. like I said before I admire Perry's work because his stories is based on real life scenarios. His stories will often give a message that teaches you what goes on in everyday life.

Set Designs

I decided to design the set for the play Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young "star-crossed lovers" whose sudden deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. The reason why I chose the play Romeo and Juliet is that it is a very popular story that everyone knows. I would love to design a set for this famous play. It will be very fun and creativity. For my scenes, I want to include beautiful scene sets with romantic colors. This play took place in 16 century. Therefore, for my set design is going to be based around that era, most of my sets will have that dark eerily feeling for the fight scenes, for example, the sword fight between Tybalt and Mercutio and the other sword battle between Romeo and Tybalt. Another dark and eerily scene is when Romeo is talking to Juliet below the balcony. I wanted the scene to be dark because Romeo is sneaking over to her place to see her. I think it was a very brave for Romeo to sneak over to see her knowing that he can be killed for being there. For the love, scenes between Romeo and Juliet the stage color will be bright and lovely. It will have that romantic love feeling with elegant coloring. The set design for scene when Romeo discovers Juliet is dead will have that dark and sad feeling. The stage will switch back and forth with different colors themes. I will use dark stage setting to represent fighting scenes, death scenes, and light lovely stage set colors to represent love scenes.
